DMEM: Ham's F12:MCDB 104 (2:1:1) + 2mM Glutamine + 10% Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS). Split confluent cultures 1:2 to 1:4 i.e. seeding at 2x10,000 cells/cm2 using 0.25% trypsin/EDTA; 5% CO2; 37C.
Karyotype: 2n = 60-82, 82 predominant
Established from the metastases of a follicular carcinoma in a female patient. Tumorigenic in nude mice. The basal release of immuno-detectable thyroglobulin increased in response to thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). The cell line grows as a monolayer without the formation of follicles. Electronmicroscopy studies showed the presence of microvilli with interdigitations between neighbouring cells.
